I raced up in Hartwell Georgia at a small sprint race organized by the Ytriseries. The race started next to the Hartwell Dam, in the lake with very good conditions. The water was about 82 degrees and the only hazard was a flock of geese that swam in front of us at the start. They did move as we got closer to them but that was a first for me! I was in the second wave with the females, males started first. The distance was long for a sprint, about 800 meters.
The bike was rolling, straight out and back course on country roads. My legs felt tired after a busy week and I had not tapered for this race, I just wanted to have a good workout. The course was supposed to be 15 miles but it was actually 17 miles, surprise! The run was a completely flat 5K, out and back on the Dam which was cool. The clouds gave some relief from the heat or else it could have been really hot out there. I could see one girl chasing me on the run but I knew I was running at my max so all I could do was hold on. I ran a 21:20 which I was happy with, and ended up first female and third out of all the participants. It turns out that my swim(12:51) was the fastest of the day! That helped me keep the lead since the girl chasing me was a better biker than I was. I enjoyed the race, saw some friends, and won a gift certificate for money off the purchase of some carbon race wheels. My husband took advantage of that since he needed some!
